A Connecticut-Wrapped Classic
The New World Connecticut is the logical follow-up to the incredibly popular original New World Maduro cigar by master blender AJ Fernandez. The brand itself pays tribute to the discovery of tobacco in the New World. This Toro vitola—measuring 6 inches by 52 ring gauge—is part of a core series in AJ’s portfolio, handcrafted in Estelí, Nicaragua. Unlike the original New World blend, which was box-pressed, this Connecticut version features a classic round shape. It is widely recognized as a perfect selection for an early morning smoke, pairing exceptionally well with a strong black coffee.
The Blend and Cultivation
This blend was developed by the father–son duo of AJ Fernandez and Ismael, with a focus on delivering a more mellow character. It features vintage long-fillers sourced from both Brazil and Nicaragua, encased in a rugged Mexican San Andrés binder. The cigar is finished with a true U.S.-grown Connecticut shade wrapper leaf, prized for its silky texture, light color, and mild-to-medium flavor profile. On the Toro, this wrapper presents an attractive, consistent appearance with a classic butterscotch-blond hue.
The Blend and Flavor
This mellow-to-medium-bodied cigar is designed to engage the palate without overpowering it. Upon lighting, the profile is creamy and smooth, with mellow core flavors of fresh bread, cedar, and white pepper. As the cigar develops, subtle notes of cream, spice, and cedar grow in intensity, leading to a nutty progression around the halfway point. Throughout the experience, smokers will encounter complex flavor notes including coffee, dark cocoa, and earth—often complemented by hints of vanilla bean and brown sugar that mingle beautifully with underlying wood and spice. The overall experience ensures the Connecticut wrapper’s inherent sweeter nuances are preserved and expressed with clarity.
